For the past few decades, urban flooding has become a serious and widespread issue, owing to the frequency of its occurrence and its varied impacts. Most researches see it as a result of rapid urbanization and poor/unplanned infrastructure systems.
While that might be one of the reasons, the main reason of urban flood is a result of a larger, more complicated system of networks. It is the lack of integration and harmony between these networks – both natural and man-made – that has aggravated the situation, and has caused havoc and loss to human lives, economy, environment and infrastructure.
The design intent, thus, lies in identifying the systems & their issues and responding to them sensitively, within the given parameters of nature. The problem starts taking shape through the origin of the river system, i.e. the source, and builds up as it reaches its destination, i.e. the sea. Understanding the land profile, context and the land potential is a crucial aspect for controlling flood issues. Careful and sensitive planning of systems using landscape urbanism concepts ,at every stage of the water system, can help mitigate the consequences of urban flooding in an economical and sustainable way.
